How to write bundle page references into your skeleton argument
Leave an underscore where each page reference belongs. LHT DMS fills them in from the index, and corrects them when the bundle changes.
The short answer
A skeleton argument, written submission, witness statement or affidavit refers to documents by their page numbers in the bundle. Those numbers are usually typed in by hand once the bundle is paginated, and typed again whenever the bundle changes.
LHT DMS is a desktop program for Windows and macOS that writes them for you. You leave an underscore in the Word document where each page reference belongs, and the app fills every one from the bundle index. When the bundle changes, you run it again and the references it wrote are corrected. We have not found another product that writes bundle page references back into the Word document.
Doing it by hand
By hand, you wait for the paginated bundle, look up each document in the index and type its page numbers into the Word document. Three things go wrong:
The bundle changes. A document is added or the order is altered, and every reference after that point is wrong.
The work falls at the last moment, when the bundle is settled and the hearing is close.
A wrong page number in a skeleton sends the judge to the wrong page.
Doing it automatically with LHT DMS
Build the index from the case folderOn the Draft Index tab, choose the folder that holds your numbered documents and create the index. Each document has an item number in the index.
Mark the references in your Word documentWhere a page reference belongs, type the item number followed by an underscore, for example LHT1/1/_ for item 1. The app reads only the number and the underscore, so the prefix can be whatever you use. For authorities, use a double underscore, for example BOA/1/__.
Choose what to fillChoose Replace Single for documents or Replace Double for authorities, and tick Add p./pp. if you want that prefix.
Click Update WordSelect the Word document when asked. The app fills each reference with the page numbers of that item, for example LHT1/1/pp.5-10. Your original is copied to a DMS Backup folder before anything is changed.
Run it again when the bundle changesUpdate the index, then click Update Word again. The references it wrote before are corrected to the new page numbers.

Every marked reference filled with the right bundle page numbers, whether a single page or a range.
With Add p./pp. ticked, "p." for a single page and "pp." for a range.
Documents and authorities handled separately, by single and double underscore. Where they are in separate folders, run Update Word once for each.
A triple underscore is left alone, so that you can keep reminders to yourself in the draft.
A copy of your original in a DMS Backup folder.
It works on any Word document: skeleton arguments, written submissions, witness statements and affidavits.
Where your document goes
Nowhere. The Word document is read and changed on your own computer, and the page numbers come from the bundle index. Nothing is uploaded to Legal Hi Tech or to any third party, and the software uses no generative AI.
Questions
Can Word do this with its own cross-references?
Not for a bundle. A cross-reference in Word points to a place inside the same Word document. It cannot follow the page numbers of a separate bundle.
What happens when the bundle is reordered or a document is added?
Update the index and click Update Word again. The references already written are corrected to the new page numbers.
Does it change anything else in my document?
No. It fills only the references you marked with a single or double underscore. A triple underscore is left alone, and your original is copied to a DMS Backup folder first.
Does it work for witness statements and affidavits?
Yes. It works on any Word document that refers to documents by their bundle page numbers.
What does it cost?
The desktop app is free for all of 2026, with every feature and no limit on the number or size of files. Annual licensing begins in January 2027. Prices are on the pricing page.
