File size limits · Volumes

Bundle too large to file? Split it into volumes.

Under the court's limit, divided between documents, with the page numbers running on from one volume to the next.

The short answer

Each court portal limits the size of a PDF. In Peninsular Malaysia, EFS accepts up to 50 MB. In Sabah and Sarawak, EKSS accepts up to 20 MB. In England & Wales, CE-File accepts up to 100 MB in the civil courts, and the limit may be 50 MB in the family courts and some tribunals. A bundle over the limit has to be made smaller or divided.

LHT DMS, a desktop program for Windows and macOS, does both as it compiles the bundle. It compresses the pages to 150 DPI and, where one file will still not fit, splits the bundle into volumes just under the limit. The split falls between documents, and the page numbers run on from one volume to the next.

Doing it by hand

By hand, you guess where to cut, split the file, check the size of each part and try again. Three things go wrong:

Doing it with LHT DMS

  1. Open the Compile tab and drag the case folder inChoose Process an entire Folder.
  2. Leave Compress to 150 DPI tickedCompression keeps the bookmarks, the page labels, fillable forms and annotations.
  3. Check the figure beside Split into volumesIt arrives set just under the limit for your jurisdiction: 49.5 MB for Peninsular Malaysia, 19.7 MB for Sabah & Sarawak and 99 MB for England & Wales. Change it if your court's limit is different.
  4. Leave Continuous numbering across volumes tickedIf volume 1 ends at page 120, volume 2 starts at page 121. Untick it only if each volume should start again at page 1.
  5. Press CompileThe volumes are saved under the output name followed by (1), (2) and so on.

What you get

Where your documents go

Nowhere. The bundle is compiled and split on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded to Legal Hi Tech or to any third party, and the software uses no generative AI.

Questions

What are the file size limits?

EFS in Peninsular Malaysia accepts up to 50 MB for each PDF. EKSS in Sabah and Sarawak accepts up to 20 MB. CE-File in England & Wales accepts up to 100 MB in the civil courts; it may be 50 MB in the family courts and some tribunals. Check the limit for your own court.

Where does the split fall?

Between documents. The app adds whole documents to a volume until the next one would take it over the limit, then starts a new volume.

What if one document is larger than the limit by itself?

It cannot be divided further. It is kept whole as its own volume, and the app names it so that you can deal with it.

Can each volume start again at page 1?

Yes. Untick Continuous numbering across volumes.

What does it cost?

The desktop app is free for all of 2026, with every feature and no limit on the number or size of files. Annual licensing begins in January 2027. Prices are on the pricing page.

Free for all of 2026, for Windows and macOS.
